Can I research a site that is not built yet?
Yes. Choose "I Am Planning One", describe the business, and the research treats it as a new domain: what to launch first, and what a site with no authority can reach.
- Press Add a Site and choose I Am Planning One.
- Give the business a name and describe what it will sell in a sentence or two, who buys it, and how it will make money. Name up to five competitors if you know them; their pages sharpen the profile's vocabulary.
- Press Build the Profile. The profile is drafted from your description, not from a site, and you confirm it the same way.
What is different
- No own rankings. There is nothing to rank yet, so the research does not look for pages you already have.
- Reachable means something stricter. A new domain starts with no backlinks. Reachable means the top ten could be reached within roughly a year by building the page well and earning a modest number of links, judged from the weakest domain in the top ten.
- Decisions are build or skip. There is nothing to improve.
- The plan is a launch order. Pages the business sells from, such as the home, service, product and category pages, come first; supporting articles after.
- Briefs link to each other. Internal links point at the other planned pages by their working titles.
Later
When the site exists, add its address on the Settings tab under Go live. It becomes a live site, and the next profile run reads the real pages. See How do I take a planned site live?.
